Trusting Your Self

“I feel so confused about what to do,” said Kate (not her real name). “My job ends next week and nothing has opened up. I’ve been on the computer for weeks, sending out resumes, but the only jobs I find would be a big cut in pay, or I’d have to relocate to the northeast. I’m trying to keep trusting that my Source will take care of me, but I am feeling so out on a limb right now. I should just have faith and not worry about it, right?”

“Kate,” I said, “I’d feel out on a limb too if I were dealing with what you are dealing with, so let’s start by acknowledging that on a physical plane level it is scary to be facing the end of a dependable paycheck.”

“Thanks, I was feeling like a spiritual wimp for not trusting that it would all work out somehow.”

“Well let’s start by sorting out the levels you are dealing with. First, you have the physical reality. We live in a culture that requires exchange of money to meet survival needs: food, clothing, shelter . . .”

“ . . . and wine and Häagen Dazs,” said Kate.

“I see you still have your sense of humor. Good. It will come in handy! So . . . on the physical level it can be very scary wondering if you will be able to feed, clothe and shelter your physical self.”

I recommended Sanaya Roman’s book, Creating Money as a good place for Kate to begin. It would help her zero in on the essence of what she was looking for rather than focusing on the black and white criteria of what kind of job would suit her. “Can you surrender to letting the Universe place you where you are needed most in this time of planetary evolution? Can you let go of your requirements of what this next phase of your journey should look like? Can you let yourself be guided?”

“You know every situation has many possible perspectives from which to view it, right?”

“One perspective you could have is that this is an opportunity to fine tune your internal navigation system (emotions, physical sensations, intuition, etc.). As we shift out of the old paradigm of looking to authorities outside of ourselves to tell us what to do, those of us on a path of spiritual growth . . . of developing our consciousness . . . are having to blaze our own trails. We have books, The New Earth, for example, and speakers like Wayne Dyer, and workshops like the Law of Attraction, and numerous internet teachers telling us what to do to find our way. All of these can be useful signposts, but ultimately the goal is for you to know who you are, why you are here and to be living your life On Purpose in alignment with your Source.”

“I just don’t know which way to turn. I am so afraid of ending up homeless!”

We talked about the non-stop fear-mongering from the media and the toll it was taking on Kate. I asked her if she could surrender to the idea of being homeless if that was for her highest good, knowing that the ultimate goal of the Universe is for her spiritual advancement. Once she let go of having to fight against the possibility of being homeless, she was engulfed in a feeling of peace.

By the way, I am fairly certain she will not end up homeless, but the fear of it was cutting her off from her spiritual guidance.

“The word of the day is discernment,” I said. “This means walking through each day, asking for guidance, paying attention to your internal navigational system, making quiet time to hear your intuition, taking one baby step after the other in the direction you are prompted even if it doesn’t seem to make sense.”

“Uh huh,” said Kate apparently taking in the message.

“It means tuning out the media so you can stay aligned and focused on your internal guidance system. It means taking with a grain of salt advice others have for how you should manage this crisis . . . this includes advice from those who have psychic abilities. From their perspective they may ‘see’ what path you ‘should’ take, but if it doesn’t resonate with the deepest part of yourself, it is not right for you, at least not now.”

“Always, always, always use your discernment on what advice is useful to you and what is not,” I reminded Kate. “Listen. Evaluate. Then tune in to what feels right to you, and act accordingly. You can be pretty sure if something doesn’t feel right to you, it is not right for you, at least not right now. It might ultimately be the right thing, but maybe there are some interim steps you need to take. You are the final authority for yourself!”

“You know,” Kate said, “there was this one job I called about, but it was a longer commute than I wanted so I didn’t investigate it . . . but it keeps coming up in my mind and I keep dismissing it . . . hmm.”

“Sounds like your internal guidance system might be nudging you to take a look. What do you think?”

We ended the call with Kate feeling hopeful and renewed. I told her I would light a candle for her and hold her in the light as she made her way through this maze of twists and turns not knowing where she would land when she came out the other side of it.

BOTTOM LINE: Discernment evolves as consciousness expands. The more in tune you are with yourself the more you are able to discern what path to take, what resource to use, what teacher to follow.

TIP: Look for teachers who are actively on a path of continued spiritual growth for themselves. Look for teachers who are joyful for you when your learning surpasses theirs and you are ready to move on to a new teacher . . . or become one yourself.

P.S. Remember when you are afraid you can’t think straight. When faced with a crisis the first step is to do what it takes to overcome the fear, and then take action.

P.P.S. Surrendering to the idea of what you are afraid of almost always leads to a sense of inner peace and calm.
