Besides sp^m email offering to enhance my “male prowess” (excuse me?) I’m getting lots of email offering me copies of designer watches that promise the following:
- make me look gorgeous (I’m already gorgeous, in a spiritual sort of way)
- have a timepiece that will be better than anyone else’s (Why would I care?)
- allow me to follow fashion (Hah!)
- have a timepiece I won’t be embarrassed of (I don’t embarrass that easily)
- a watch that decorates me better than shyness (If I want to be decorated I’ll get a tatoo!)
Anyway, I’m pretty satisfied with my trusty Timex, so I routinely hit delete.
But, an interesting thing happened the other day on my way to buy new underwear (not too much information, I hope). As I was approaching the lingerie department I spied a vast display of watches. Not only did I notice them, I slowed down to take a closer look wondering what a designer watch looks like.
Fortunately all the years of working to expand my consciousness paid off in that moment. Two thoughts rang loud and clear in my head: Hey . . . wait a minute, I don’t need a watch. And I’m being influenced by all those junk emails to have an interest in watches that I have no interest in, or need for.
Wow! It was startling to realize how easily my focus of attention could be hijacked . . . by sp^m no less!
Serendipitously, the same day I came across an excerpt from the book Virus of the Mind: The New Science of the Meme by Richard Brodie, Chapter Eight “How We Get Programmed.” The first on his list of three ways we can be programmed is the process of conditioning, or repetition. (Like receiving repeated emails with subject lines that don’t even interest me!)
Now I have known for a long time that everything I see, sense, hear, and experience is recorded in my memory bank. Back in the day when I used to watch TV I knew it was important to not go to sleep with the TV on. The programming goes on whether I am awake or asleep.
My kids used to get so irritated with me when I would object to something they were watching on TV. I’d say “hey you don’t want that stuff stored in your brain, do you?” In the most eye rolling tone of voice they’d say, “Mom . . . it’s only a TV show!”
Hah! I was right! I’ll be sure to have a copy of Virus of the Mind on hand at Thanksgiving to back me up. Just kidding.
Anyway, my point is until my “designer watch” episode I’d had no personal proof of how easily we can be programmed to have thoughts that we believe are our own.
BOTTOM LINE: You need to take charge of what enters your memory bank by consciously choosing the kind of input you want.
- Choose music that uplifts you like www.OneVibrationRadio.org . I highly recommend the music of Stefan Mitchell, Karen Drucker, Karen Taylor Good and Scott Kalechstein.
- Choose movies that inspire you, like independently made movies available through the Spiritual Cinema Circle www.SpiritualCinemaCircle.com , and What the Bleep Do We Know? available at www.WhatTheBleep.com .
- Choose radio talk shows that inform and inspire you, like www.HayHouseRadio.com . You’ll hear all your favorites like Wayne Dyer, Cheryl Richardson, Doreen Virtue, Abraham-Hicks, Deepak Chopra, Carolyn Myss, and many more.
- Choose books that inspire you . . . like my book, Becoming Conscious: One Woman’s Story of Spiritual Awakening. Just kidding.
OK. I am not kidding. The people who loved my book really loved it. It stands to reason that there are some people who didn’t like my book, it’s just that I never hear from them. I only hear from the ones who “couldn’t put it down.”
BTW you can read the first 4 chapters for free and/or order the book by clicking here: www.SpiritualGrowthCommunity.com/book.html .
For those of you over the age of 13, “BTW” is email/text speak for “by the way.”
TIP: “Garbage In, Garbage Out,” was a phrase used early in the computer industry to temper blind faith in computer output. It would be wise to apply the same attitude to what you allow to enter your memory bank.
P.S. Do a quick review of your daily encounters and ask yourself, do I want . . .
. . . this person (these people)
. . . this TV show
. . . this book
. . . this movie
. . . this group
. . . this talk show host
having an influence on my mind? Then take action accordingly.
P.P.S. If you have ever had a thought that you wondered where the heck it came from, or if you’ve ever done something that caused you to ask “what was I thinking?” Now you know. Your thinking could possibly have been hijacked by mind programming. Or you could fall back on the old standby: “The devil made me do it!”
Have you been sold something you didn’t really want? Do you find yourself quoting “facts” from others that you haven’t checked out yourself? What do you think? I
want to hear from you!
I’ll “see” you in our next newsletter on October 14th.
Love & Light,
