| Fear: The EGO is Not Bad. It Just Needs to Grow Up! |
|
“I just loved Eckhart Tolle’s book, The Power of Now,” said Maryanne (not her real name). “I get it that I need to get rid of my ego to become my Authentic Self. I just don’t know how.”
“Harrumph,” sputtered Helen (not her real name, either). “You think Eckhart doesn’t have an ego?” Helen chided. “What about him being on Oprah? That takes ego.”
Maryanne’s smile faded as her eyebrows scrunched into a frown.
“Sorry,” said Helen. “I didn’t realize I had such an emotional charge on this whole ego thing.”
“Forgiven,” said Maryanne, her smile returning.
As my friends continued exploring the notion of ego, the energy of insight pulsed into the back of my mind. “Wait! I’m getting something,” I said, feeling like a kid at the start of a treasure hunt.
“What?” they asked leaning forward.
Tilting my head as if to hear the inner message more clearly, I closed my eyes and “listened.”
Opening my eyes I said, “OK. We all know humanity is in the midst of a big evolutionary step forward. The ego is a natural stage or phase of this evolution. There is nothing to get over or get rid of. We need to grow through the ego stage.”
I couldn’t help smiling and emitting the tiniest giggle as the next insight materialized. “You know the stages of human development . . . infant, toddler, child, teenager, young adult and so on . . . well, the ego is humanity’s teenager!”
I sat back savoring the after-glow of satisfaction that always follows insight.
“Wow,” said Maryanne, “that puts a whole new spin on it doesn’t it? I mean, thinking of the ego as a teenager is a lot different than the picture of an evil aspect of ourselves trying to trick us into not waking up to who we truly are. I like thinking of the ego as an awkward, hormone-driven, teenager in the throes of growing up! And just like the ego, don’t teenagers think they just know everything?”
“Hmm . . .,” said Helen. “Instead of seeing the ego as our enemy, we need to develop skills to guide it through this growth phase . . . sort of like taking parenting classes.”
“Yes! Of course . . . I see,” I said. “That means a big part of spiritual growth is learning how to keep tabs on our ego like we’d do with a teenager,” I said. “Recognizing when it is creating havoc and taking appropriate action to help it mature, while giving it room to grow through this stage without letting it run amok. . . . no easy task! And hopefully, we can inject big doses of love and compassion for ourselves as part of the guidance process,” I concluded.
BOTTOM LINE: Seeing the ego as an aspect of ourselves that is in the process of maturing gives us a very different perspective. Even though we might get mad at ourselves over some ego-driven behavior, (what teenager hasn’t wanted to die from embarrassment over an immature behavior?) with this new perspective we can be kind and compassionate with ourselves while we take self-correcting actions that support us in becoming spiritual adults.
TIP: I am reminded of a long pointer stick used by teachers to point to specific points on a chart or graph. My first mentor, Judy Reis, had one that had printed on it “the beatings will continue until morale improves.” Now is a good time to toss that stick in the trash and start treating ourselves with loving kindness as we wend our way through the maturing process of evolving our ego into our Authentic Self.
P.S. You have inside of you everything you need to master becoming a spiritual adult. The spiritual journey is one of developing mastery in the skill of being your Authentic Self . . . the Self you were born to be. This means letting go of the programmed beliefs that you were trained to have. Being part of the Spiritual Growth Community lets you explore without doctrine, dogma or judgment as you make your own discoveries and demonstrate your growing mastery in a safe and supportive environment.
